Mr. Bennett was appalled at the request of Mr. Darcy to marry Elizabeth. Mr. Bennett consented because Mr. Darcy was wealthy and socially (as well as personally) powerful.
When Lizzy came to see Mr. Bennett, he feared she was only marrying Darcy for his money and social position and that she would be unhappy in her marriage (as he was by marrying Mrs. Bennett for her looks when she was actually a shallow, empty-headed twit.)
Only after Lizzy convinced her father of her true love and respect for Darcy and informed Mr. Bennett of Darcy's forcing Wickham to marry Lydia (by paying for the wedding and the commission for Wickham), thus saving the entire family from social ruin (which would have prevented ANY of the daughters from marrying into respectable families) does Mr. Bennett come to respect Mr. Darcy as a kind, well-bred, respectable gentleman worthy of Mr. Bennett's favorite daughter, Lizzy.
Mr. Bennet was surprised by the news of Elizabeth's engagement to Mr. Darcy but ultimately was happy for her. He recognized the depth of their feelings for each other and respected their decision.
