Each state has its own procedures for issuing marriage licenses and rules for how soon the ceremony must be performed and the signed license returned. If you obtained your license and held the ceremony but just did not return the license, you may still have time to return the license before the license is void. I suggest that you contact the County that you obtained your license from to verify the status of your license. Many counties have online information regarding the procedure and important deadlines. Attached is a website link for marriage license information for all 50 states and most counties. Using the attached link, you can scroll to your county for specific information about your situation.

Minister forgot to turn the marriage license in and you got married 4 years ago in South Carolina now what can it still be filed or is it too late?

Some states have a common law marriage, where if two persons are living together for more than three or four years. Then they are recognised as being married. Now if you have the license then I would turn it in to the county clerk.

Is your marriage legal if your licens was not turn in to the clerk of courts?

No. You have 30 days from the date that the license was issued to turn it in (or at least that's the rule here). When they give you the license, it's needing to be taken and signed. It is the judge's or reverend's job to make sure it's turned in and he/she could be in big trouble. If you don't turn it back in, how do they know that you didn't just change your mind about getting married? They won't. So there is no record of your marriage unless the license is turned in.
