The freeing of slaves was called emancipation. President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation effective 1 January 1863. It proclaimed emancipation (freedom) for all slaves from states then at war with the Union.

The end of the US Civil War saw the end of slavery in the US. This was accomplished by the 13th amendment to the US Constitution in December of 1865. By freeing an enslaved people, the entire nation had the potential to enhance itself by allowing former slaves to participate in all areas of American life. Former slaves also were able to in theory take part and benefit from US laws and its institutions of education, business and government.
