Talk about identity crisis... This thing has 3 names:

  • Neutral safety start switch
  • Transmission range sensor
  • Manual lever position sensor/switch

Us old-timers probably relate more to the neutral start switch though...

Another name for it is PRNDL switch. Sounded out like "perndal switch"

What does transmission range sensor do?

Range sensors do just what the name implies. They sense the transmission range the operator of the vehicle has selected. These sensors are important for transmission shift patterns and characteristics. Also in some vehicles they control starting, as you may start an engine in neutral and park alone.

I have heard that too... The sensor mentioned is the "Transmission Range Sensor", which is also commonly known by it's old name "neutral safety / start switch".If you promise to come back to this question and report back if this proves to be a solution, or not, to this problem... I'll refer you to the "Related Questions" below for specific instructions for finding & replacing the transmission range sensor.
