There shouldn't be... but a .dot file is supposed to be a template, and if you just choose to start a new document based on that template, it will become a .doc file just by doing that... no conversion necessary.

Are Microsoft word and open office 3 compatible?

Yes. Partly. No. Depends on what you want to do. For general users there almost never are any problems, for advanced users there are some issues. Open Office can open and edit documents created and saved with Microsoft Word in Words native formats of .doc and .docx. Word cannot open OpenOffice's .odt format but Open Office can save as .doc (several versions), .docx and other file types that MS Word can recognize. You will find some incompatibilities if you have some advanced formatting, some table formatting etc.

What is the difference between .doc and .rtf?

The main difference is that .doc is used by Microsoft Word and has more advanced features like images, tables, and formatting tools. On the other hand, .rtf, or Rich Text Format, is a simpler file type that keeps basic formatting like bold or italic, but not much more. You can open both in many programs, but .doc is better if you’re working on something detailed. .rtf is lighter and more universal, great for quick edits or sharing across different systems. So, it really depends on what kind of document you’re making.

What do you need to save a word document as so that a mac can read it?

If the Mac has Word installed it can read a Word .doc file - although there are variations between different versions of Word which may cause problems. Even without Word the Mac's TextEdit application can read basic .doc files. There are free applications, such as Open Office (or Neo Office), which provides a high level of compatibility with Word. If the document is only to be read, and not edited on the Mac, then saving it as a .pdf will ensure that the Mac sees the document, with all its formatting, as intended.
