Even though there are breed standards, there is no guarantee that your dog will fall within them.That being said, Bernese mountain dogs are considered to be family loyal, good with kids, and very playful. One thing that could cause an issue is that they are very large (upwards of 110 pounds). Large dogs are notorious for taking longer to mentally mature than smaller dogs. They have a great big body, but a lower maturity for a while. This means it could take longer to learn not to jump on the kids or to be careful when running by them. Even though it would likely be unintentional, the dog could bang a small child up while the dog is doing some growing up himself.
