Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, but it is also an entirely independent nation. The name British Columbia refers back to the time when Canada was like a colony of Great Britain. These days, many Canadians think of themselves as first and foremost citizens of Canada; but some (especially older English-speaking Canadians) still recall the historical ties with England and still think of the British monarchy with fondness.
