They used to be, but they have not been for many years. In 1867, Canada became a dominion, and in 1982, the last vestiges of British rule were officially ended. Canada is still part of the British Commonwealth, but it is also an entirely independent nation. The name British Columbia refers back to the time when Canada was like a colony of Great Britain. These days, many Canadians think of themselves as first and foremost citizens of Canada; but some (especially older English-speaking Canadians) still recall the historical ties with England and still think of the British monarchy with fondness.
