No it is not okay.

Nope. Bad habit to get into. Ruins your ability to breathe, gives you cancer, and you smell like an ashtray.

Cigarette's may seem cool to some people, but in reality they are just harmful to your health. They are NOT cool AT ALL. They can cause all kinds of problems as you grow older as an adult such as cancer. It also affects people around because they can get something called second hand smoke which is sometimes more harmful then actual smoking.

Your body is the temple of God, and we are not to defile it, but at the same time smoking is not a sin unto death. But we will have to account for it. One thing The Bible says that can be applied to things like smoking is this: 1 Corinthians 6:12 "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." So God doesn't want us to be slaves to things. That's another good reason not to smoke, as well as not harming our bodies, which were made to be the temple of God.

Answer 1

There is no specific text in the Bible that says that smoking cigarettes is a sin. I will answer the question in different ways:

1. Jokingly - There is a text in the King James Version of the Bible that says "Rebekkah lit off the camel." This is just a chuckle based on the fact that a brand of cigarettes is Camel Cigarettes.

2. Philosophically - In 1 Corinthians 10:31 the Bible says, "whatever you do, do all to glorify God". It is difficult to think that smoking can glorify God.

3. Logically - In 1 Corinthians 6:19 it says, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. You were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body." This verse is written to Christians, as they are said to have the Holy Spirit living within them. Christians who understand this teaching, almost universally believe that smoking cigarettes would be sin for them, as it is a matter of polluting God's temple. Further, a believer understands that he/she does not belong to himself/herself. Christians look for, not we can get away with, but what will glorify God. We are His property and seek to fittingly represent Him.

4. Personally - I was converted to Christ at the age of 23 years. No one brought up smoking. I just became extremely sick of the sin that was in my life. I noticed how it was ruining me. I was not thinking about smoking or not smoking. I needed a Savior who would rescue me from that awful stuff called sin. I came to Jesus Christ in faith. I trusted Him. New life entered me. I became a new person. I began to care about myself. I wanted to be clean. I wanted to serve God. I took notice of the Surgeon General's warning about smoking. And I quit smoking. I don't think smoking would have sent me to hell, but it did make me smell like I had been there.

I learned that I am a steward of God, and that all that I have was really His. I am now 70 years old. I would have spent over $100,000 on cigarettes during that time. That would not have been good stewardship of what God entrusted to me.

Answer 2

There is no explicit Biblical verse that says that smoking is prohibited. However, most of the religions that prohibit this call upon Biblical verses such as Leviticus 18:5 (below). The passage can be read in two ways, the first way is that somebody who follows the law will live. The second is that the goal of the laws is to promote life. In the second variation, a prohibition on smoking comes from the fact that these acts actively worsen a person's condition with no real benefit. As a result, smoking is prohibited unless medically necessary.

Leviticus 18:5 (NIV): Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the LORD.
