Sometimes people mean them to be the same but Great Britain is in fact the island comprising the mainlands of Scotland, Wales and England while the United Kingdom contains all of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Most people refer to the country when the say Great Britain, but in reality it is just the main island in a country called the UK. People also often refer to the UK as England. England is actually just a part of the island of Great Britain. Very confusing isn't it?
