Are Jack Russells a well behaved dog?

No dog is hard to train, provided the training is done with care and without violence (this includes making sudden loud noises). The younger you start, the better, but older dogs poorly trained can be turned around with love and kindness. Baby puppies shouldn't be left to cry alone for long periods (a half hour is a very long time to a baby, and possibly even longer to your neighbours and neighbouring dogs!) as this will make them insecure, and it is more difficult to train a nervous and insecure animal. Do seek expert advice; don't listen to people who are anxious to pass on wisdom they might not possess. Look at your advisors' dogs. Are they happy, playful, secure, obedient, calm and sweet-natured? Then consider the advice of their owners.

They are extremely energetic, MUST be exercised daily.If not , they can become destructive. They are very bright and eager to please, but need consistent reinforcement. If you are not a high energy person with plenty of time and energy and room to run , this is probably not the dog for you.

The Jack Russell is a wonderful breed. But this is not a breed for everyone. Russells are usually healthy, energetic and intelligent and bond very well with their owners. They have almost limitless energy and need to be exercised every day. Their intelligence can make them more difficult to train, needing a patient and persistant handler. They need mental as well as physical exercise and if left alone too long may get into some mischief. It is always wise to teach your Russell obedience, undisciplined Russells are a recipe for disaster.

For the right person(s) or family this breed is a great choice. They are loving and loyal and thrive as a companion. But if you want a quiet, docile pet that will lay at your feet and snooze all day, the Russell is not the dog for you. JR's are more or less an 'in your face' kind of dog. He won't be ignored and he may demand that you respect his intellec and thought-process. But they are so fun!

All dogs are dangerous. They are predators.

Dogs are descended from wolves, one of the most feared predators there is. Although they have been bred and changed over centuries, dogs still have their ancestral wolf traits in their genetics. There is no way to remove that trait unless you play god in a genetic laboratory.

If a dog is trained properly and treated with love and respect, they will never cause any harm to anyone except to people who pose a threat to their human family. Jack Russells were bred as rat and rabbit hunters as they were small enough to get down their warrens to kill the rodent and drag it back to the surface.

All dogs have the ability to be dangerous, which is why they need to be trained from the day they are able to be and treated with respect. If raised correctly, they will never be harmful.
