In combat it would appear that in Lucas' universe, the Sith have the advantage because of greater aggression and a willingness to cheat. The price paid is a shorter lifespan as the Dark Side consumes the bearer. This seems like more of an opinion question, considering Lucas added to the "drama" by nearly evenly matching the two, to answer your question.
