Speaking as a proud owner of a LCD television, I can say they are worth the purchase. The picture is great and it is fairly cheap when compared to other televisions offering similar components.
An LCD tv has a smoother picture because of the liquid crystals that have been developed in the screen. The picture is clearer and easier to see then a non-LCD tv screen.
Sony LCD TVs have a great extended warranty for consumers. You do have to pay for it, but the highpoint is that you can be guaranteed a new TV is your TV breaks and it is over 32 inches. Any smaller TV's can be easily repaired in home or sent away to be reconditioned.

A brand-new 29" LCD HD TV runs about $250 on a good day. You could probably get around that.

The lamp can't be 'repaired', it is always just replaced. I would contact the store where you purchased the TV and see if they can order you a replacement lamp. Most TV's can be re-lamped by the customer.
