In most juristictions and synods, they may. In some small Lutheran synods, bishops may not, while priests/pastors and deacons/deaconesses may. Lutheran clergy who are not married are bound to celibacy. Those who believe they have the gift of celibacy, sometimes take a vow of celibacy to devote their entire life to evangelism and charitable work. This is most common in deaconess communites and amongst Lutheran monastics.

∙ 15y agoYes they may marry. Mandatory celibacy is not required by most Lutheran communities. Compulsory celibacy for bishops is practiced in some small Lutheran jurisdictions. Luther himself, a German priest and monk, was married to a nun named Katarina Von Bora. Some pastors, bishops or deacons/deaconnesses who believe they have the God-given gift to do so may take a vow of celibacy to more fully devote their lives to ministry and social work.
