It all depends on the content. Yes NC-17 shows can be harmful to your MIND. Anything you put in through your eye gate and ear gate has an affect on you. And for that matter, any sounds that your body feels have an affect too.

Choose wisely what you put in. Because, once it is in, there is no taking it back out.

I don't think any movie is "harmful"-- it's only images on a screen, and it's not real life. But that said, some movies can definitely be upsetting, and some can make the viewer uncomfortable. Also, it goes without saying that an NC-17 film is totally inappropriate for children, due to explicit sexual scenes or extreme violence. But that is the reason for the rating: NC-17 movies often involve controversial subject matter, and the filmmaker intended the movie only for a mature audience, people over the age of 17. (It should be noted, however, that even some adults find NC-17 movies too intense.) I recommend seeking out movie reviews that you trust, to get a better idea of the content of the movie before you decide to see it. That way, you will probably not be too shocked by what it shows you.
