Yes PlayStation 1 and 2 are region locked. This means if you have an American PS2 (or 1) you can only play American games, no European, Japanese, etc. The PS3 and PSP , on the other hand, are region free, this means if you have a European ps3 or psp, you can buy games from Japan (if you want) and it will work.
