From April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Yes! There have been many quarter horses in show jumping, although they have been declining in numbers since warmbloods have been imported and used. A great Quarter Horse that I remember was a big palomino named 'Goldfinger', who did the jumpoff round at 6'1" at the Northwest International in '69. Unfortunately, the Quarter Horse has taken a different route in the breeding process, becoming either shorter and stronger for reining and cutting or infused with the Thoroughbred, becoming taller and loftier for hunter divisions. I currently have 2 students with Quarter Horses who are in the Junior Jumping divisions. Although the Quarter Horse may not be the first breed you think about for show jumping, there are still the odd ones who are quite successful at it in Open Divisions.

A Quarter Horse, particularly an Appendix Quarter Horse (a Quarter Horse with Thoroughbred blood), can do well in beginner and intermediate jumping. However, due to the stockier muscling and shorter stature of most pure-blood Quarter Horses, they are generally not the best at expert jumps.

Why isn't an Arabian a good barrel horse?

They just aren't built for it. Quarter horses have the ideal barrel racing conformation, with their well defined hindquarters, they are able to jump into a run from the starting gate and turn on a dime. Arabians are not built much like quarter horses. They can be good starter barrel horses, but if you want to go to the higher levels you need a horse with the build of a quarter horse.

Has a quarter horse ever been in Kentucky Derby?

No solid numbers tell the exact population. However, we can get a rough estimate by looking at the general horse population of Kentucky and the percentage of horses in the US that are quarter horses. According to a 2005 equine census, Kentucky was home to 320,173 horses. A 1998 poll (apologies for not being able to find anything more recent) found quarter horses make up 39.5% of the US horse population. therefore our rough estimate for number of quarter horses in KY are 320173 * .395 = 126,468.

When did Quarter Horse come to America?

Quarter horses are named that because they can run a Quarter of a mile really fast. They had races in the old days for a quarter of a mile and they would use Quarter horses for them. Now Quarter Horses aren't as popular for racing, because Thoroughbreds have better stamina.

Can Australian Stock Horses do cutting?

Like the American Quarter Horse, some Aussie Stock horses can and do excel at cutting. Certain bloodlines have very strong cattle working instincts. Study the breed's bloodlines and you should be able to find to best horses for cutting and cattle work.

Why is a quarterhorse called a quarter horse?

Quarter horses are so called because of their speed at sprinting (galloping) a quarter-mile. Some say that the name comes from the hefty hind-quarters of the horse; others say that the breed is one-quarter each of four other breeds, including the Thoroughbred. Nonetheless, it is the quarter-mile speed which gives the quarter horse its name.

What are the differing characteristics between the Quarter Horse the Arabian and the Quarter Pony?

The Quarter horse and Quarter pony are built nearly the exact same, except the Quarter pony is 14.2 hands and under, while the Quarter horse is 14.3 hands and up. the Quarter horse/pony is bred to be stocky and strong with larger hindquarters and the ability to sprint 440 yards (Quarter of a mile.) It was a lucky chance of breeding that the horses had a natural ability to work with cattle, this is now a feature of the horse. They tend to have slightly 'blocky' or 'bulldog' like heads. Arabians are smaller 13.2 hands and up horses that have been breed for thousands of years to be able to survive in the desert with minimal food and water and to have enough endurance to cover long distances. They are much more finely built than Quarter stock and have very refined heads that are concave in profile.

Is a mustang horse faster than a quarter horse?

Both are great horses to ride. The wild mustang program offers Mustangs for very little money. They have a few regulations you must follow to get one of these horses, but they are available and offer a great value. Mustangs are not all wild and even if they were, they can be trained. I apologize for the first writer's lack of understanding. He doesn't understand much about the equine field.

Why is the classic quarter horse confirmation unsuitable for highly competitive jumping courses?

American Quarter Horses originated in the West as cattle ponies. They are said to be very powerful and able to turn on a dime, but their compact chunky build and relatively small size (usually not more than 15.2 hands) makes them less suitable for jumping.

Who governs horses in Illinois?

It depends on the breed of the horse. Most breeds govern the horses in their registry. There is also the AHSA (American Horse Show Association) which governs open shows on a national level. Try the AHSA first and they should be able to tell you what is available in your area.
