AK-47's are not illegal in the US. In fact, I myself own one. You have two basic categories when dealing with AK-47's: Fully automatic, and semi automatic. The semi automatic version is treated like any other semi auto rifle, and is legal to purchase and own, although some states or cities may have bans on them for certain reasons.

The fully automatic version can also be purchased and owned privately, but you have to jump through a few hoops for it. You must pay a $200 tax stamp, and then wait for BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) to approve you.

The legality of AK-47s varies depending on the country or state. In some places, they are legal for civilian ownership with the proper permits, while in others they are heavily restricted or prohibited. It is important to check your local laws and regulations regarding firearms.

Illegal means against the law. But laws vary from one place to another. You did not say what place. We need more information to give you a good answer. Also the original AK47 is a machine gun. The guns available to civilians in the US are mainly semi-auto- so it also depends on the type of AK47.

Yes it is illegal in NJ and in fact it is illegal everywhere in USA. If you are a native to NJ read the book of laws of Nj in paragraph 8 in the weapons and firearms section.

What is the AK47 made of?

The receiver and receiver cover are typically made of stamped steel (Though older/higher quality AKs are made of milled steel), with solid steel barrels. In under-folding AK47s the stocks are also made of stamped steel. In standard AK47s the stock and hand guard are made of wood. In more modern AK47s the pistols grips are made of plastic, while in classic AKs they were typically wood. Current-day AKs (The AK74 series) use the same barrel and receiver materials, with plastic stocks, handguards, and pistol grip.
