It just so happens that most of the time they are. When they subject themselves to something they of all people know that is bad, just for the addiction. I think that is pretty selfish.
I don't think you can classify alcoholics as there are different levels of alcoholism, different reasons or issues for each individual, and each person is an individual. Alcoholics can certainly be demanding and selfish when it comes to actually drinking or wanting to drink. I realize their lives revolve around drinking but some are only to a degree and then some its their will to live but that's what makes them all different.
Saying that all authors are alcoholics is like saying that all kids are lazy cheaters. It's not true.
