When digital TV only is available will you be able to record programmes on your 5yr old VCR you have analog TV with a digi box?

If you already have an analog setup and it's working OK, you should still be able to record. The cable box, if it has the analog output on it, should still work the way it does now.

Why do you have to get digital television?

Older TV sets use analog signals. In February, all TV signals that are now analog will become digital because it gives more efficient use of the bandwidth. Analog sets will not receive and interpret the images from a digital transmission. It's the same reason you can't use your old TV as a computer monitor.

What is a sign your television is getting old?

If your TV only has analog cabling or still uses an antenna; If your TV is the size of a washing machine; If your TV is only in black and white; pretty obvious signs, but really if your TV doesn't have a flat screen, it's obsolete. And if your TV breaks down alot, it's probably time to replace it.

When will non-HDTVs stop receiving signals and become obsolete?

As an act of Congress, the analog broadcast cut off date is February 17, 2009. Of course, as they have done in the past, that could be changed, but since this is the second "official act" it'll most likely happen as scheduled. If you currently have an analog TV with a cable box or a satellite box, you most likely won't have to worry since they still have analog outputs on them, so your TV should continue to work. Besides, satellite TV (the same sources for the cable company's programming) is by and far for the most part, already completely digital. There may be one or two programmers that haven't transitioned yet, but when they do, you'll probably not even be aware of when it happens. My advice to you by the way, is if you have an analog TV that's working OK and the picture's good, hold off as long as possible before buying a new HDTV or a digital TV if you can. The product they're putting out these days, in my opinion, aren't nearly as reliable as your current analog TV. That's why I'm hanging onto mine as long as possible. Mainly in hopes they figure out that people won't keep buying stuff that keeps breaking down, and strengthens their designs. Additional comment: Non-DTVs are only obsolete in that aren't manufactured anymore. Except for some tiny TVs that don't have a way to connect an exernal antenna, any analog TV can receive DTV & HDTV signals. If you get you TV with an antenna, you will need to buy a cheap converter box. Cable & satilite companies generally take care of the conversion for you. The TV system is changing to DTV (digital TV), there is no mandate that all digital signals be in "HD" resolution.

What is digital analog?

Analog TV:Analog (or analogue) television encodes television picture and sound information and transmits it as an analog signal: one in which the message conveyed by the broadcast signal is a function of deliberate variations in the amplitude and/or frequency of the signal. All systems preceding digital television, such as NTSC, PAL or SECAM are analog television systems. Digital TV:Digital television (DTV) is the sending and receiving of moving images and sound by discrete (digital) signals, in contrast to the analog signals used by analog TV.

What were the sizes of analog TVs?

Analog televisions have been made in all sizes from 3 inches up to 37 inches and beyond. There is at least one model of 42 inch plasma television that was purely analog. Today, analog only televisions are increasingly hard to find and will not be made for very much longer.
