Answer: I can't answer for all people, but I am a believer and I am so happy I can't explain it. It is more like a joy or a deep peace. The road isn't always easy but it is very rewarding.

Answer: A believer would not have little reason to be happy but many reasons to be happy with what they have, who they are, and what they believe in. The same can be said for any atheist. Whether or not they are happier than one another depends on the individuals. Also, people normally go through tough times and generally aren't happy during those times, so to judge someones happiness on their beliefs or disbeliefs when there are other factors that play a part in ones state of being happy is not fair in the least.

Believers would have little reason to be happy. Some super CCTV is peering over their shoulder every secod of their lives judging every action against a book of fuzzy rules and putting gold stars or black marks against their names all of their lives. In addition there are other evil forces setting moral bear traps in their paths waiting for them to fail, and the deity is agreeable to this (see the story of Job in the Christian Bible). Not to mention the deity they believe in uses all the excuses of an abusive spouse to explain misfortunes ("It's or your own good.", "Trust me, I'm smarter than you and you just can't see why I'm hurting you." etc.). At the end his last thoughts are of the potential of eternal torment for things he did wrong.
An atheist on the other hand faces the world square on. He does good because he wants to do good, he does not act badly from his own choice. Unfortunate events are chance occurrences not slaps on the wrist from a cosmic school teacher. When he dies he knows what he did in life is his own creation and that death holds no fears.

Are atheists truly happy?

Many theists think that happiness comes from a deity, and thus atheists must be unhappy, since they do not have access to such happiness. This is telling, however: the argument states quite clearly (if you think about it) that the believer is happy because they believe in a god, not because of the god. This is true, to a degree: religious people do show more happiness than the nonreligious: they get an extra source of comfort and love. But in the words of George Bernard Shaw: "The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."Some theists say that atheists appear to be grumpy when they are in the public eye, such as on news broadcasts. This misses the point, however, that if an atheist is in the news, it will be due to a dispute of some sort, and therefore they may well be upset or passionate about the subject at hand. The simple fact is that atheists are just regular people, like anybody else. Some are happy, and others are unhappy. I am an atheist myself, as are most of my friends, and I could not find a bunch of happier, more loving people. Oh - I have a very dear friend who is a Quaker, too. She's a wonderful person :)Me? I'm quite happy, thank you :)

What kind of problems do atheists have?

The main problem faced by atheists is the discrimination brought about by the mischaracterization of atheists and misconceptions about atheism promulgated from the pulpits of many religious groups. Believers are extremely uncomfortable with those who choose not to believe in the supernatural. Misconceptions have been spread from the pulpit for centuries that atheists have no morals and values, they deny religion so they can all be libertines and do as they please, and that they are all doomed to spend eternity in hell. Religion was born out of fear of the unknown and religionists fear those who don't share that fear. Moral behavior and values can be adopted without religion. They benefit the human community and don't need religion to teach nor prove their value. There are good and bad people in every group of humans, both believers and non-believers.

How many Atheists in TN?

Tennessee is in the American Bible Belt and "coming out" as an atheist can be hazardous to a persons social standing, work prospects and health. As a consequence the demographics may be skewed towards self identifying as a Christian. Data available indicates over 80% of the citizens are Christians, 3% non-Christian religions and 9% atheists and non-believers. As an example of why atheists might not make their position known, there are no admitted atheists in the Government as Tennessee as its contitutuin disqualifies all athiests from holding "civil office". The existence of a number of blogs and Facebook pages for Tennessee atheist groups indicates an active movement of atheists, more than would be expected from the data.
