2nd Answer:
Yes. They were originally bred back in England around the 1800s to be the guard dogs for the gameskeepers who guarded the King's estate. People would often poach game on the King's estate & that was a big no no then. So the Bullmastiff came into being. Originally bred from 60% Mastiff & 40% bullmastiff was the foundation breeding. But keep in mind that back then the Bulldog was much larger & more aggressive. The breed was bred to pin & hold their prey, not to savage it as the King liked to hang the poacher in public as an example to other would be poachers. It also had to be a quiet & gentle breed so that it could live with the Gameskeepers & their families & to hunt by the Gameskeepers side which meant that they had to be quiet. The breed was recognized in the United States in the late 1920's I believe.
The correct spelling is "Bullmastiff", all one word.
1st Answer:
Yes because they are very muscular and defensive and they are very protective.
How aggressive a dog is would depend on how the dog has been brought up and treated by humans and the owner. If a dog is socialised from a young age and is given a loving home it would not be aggressive. That goes for any breed of dog, including bull terriers. Bull terriers are not any more aggressive than any other strong breed.
That said... they can be very aggressive towards other dogs, my current staffie isn't but the one before went mental and snarled like heck at other dogs
They can be guard dogs but thrive on companionship so a companion role is so much better for them.
