Catholics are never required to eat fish. They are required to abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent, and many observe this practice year-round. Fish isn't considered meat in the Lent tradition, so it has become the meal of choice on Friday. This is also why Macdonalds introduced the Filet-O-Fish burger.

Catholics from 18 through 60 must fast on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. They may eat 3 meals per day but the two smaller meals must be, combined, less than the one major meal. No eating between meals is allowed. No meat (beef, pork, chicken, etc.) and this applies from age 7 through death unless health dictates otherwise. Also, no meat is to be eaten on all other Fridays in Lent. Catholics are also encouraged to do some penance, such as abstaining from meat, on other Fridays throughout the year.

Why can you not eat meat on Good Friday?

Catholic AnswerCatholics abstain from flesh meat on Good Friday, although fish are permitted. Abstinence is applicable to everyone over 14 years of age. Anyway between 21 and 60 must also fast which means that they may take only one meal on that day, and two snacks, which together do not equal one full meal. Answer 2The above answer is not true for all Christians. Catholics are quite strict about rules, but the Reformation hundreds of years ago meant that Protestant churches did not need to enforce such rules any longer. There are no limits at all to what people can eat on Good Friday, but it is a matter of personal choice.

Meat on good Friday?

Good Friday (all day) is a day of fast and abstinence. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. By this obligation, the individual is permitted only one full meal a day. At the age of 14, people are obliged to abstain. This obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence "substantially" or as a whole is a serious obligation.
