Cats are sometimes classified as domesticated and sometimes not.
Cats are almost never fully dependent on humans for food and safety. They can be trained to do very few tasks that fall outside their normal behaviors. Cats are basically about 50% wild and 50% domestic.

∙ 14y agoThere are a number of animals in the "cat" family, some of whom are somewhat domesticated but some of whom are quite wild.
Members of the large cat families, such as mountain lions, cougar, lynx and wildcat, are mostly wild, while the smaller "housecat" exist in something of a symbiosis with humans. And there are large populations of "housecats" who are entirely wild or "feral".
However, even in the common "housecat", the cat is scarcely "domesticated" in the way that dogs or horses are. They live with us, but are mostly or entirely autonomous, living their lives around us.
The joke is that a dog thinks of a human as its master, while a cat thinks of a human as "wait-staff".
