No they are quite distinct, though they were both probably omnivorous the Cave bear (Ursus spelaeus )probably tended more toward vegetarianism while the short face (of the genus Arctodus) lent more toward a carnivorous diet. The cave bear was a Eurasian species, whereas Arctodus' origins are in North America. Physically they would have appeared very different, the Cave bear is related to and was similar in size to large examples of modern Brown bears, and would have appeared similar. Whereas the Short face has only one extant relative the South American Spectacled bear, and was larger in size, closer to and possibly exceeding that of the largest Polar bears today, though more lightly built and with longer legs. More recent interpretations of the fossil evidence have led to it often being viewed as a 'super scavenger', rather than 'super predator'.
