The Siberian tiger ( panthera tirgris altaica ) is generally recognized as the largest cat. This animal is critically endangered! The cheetah needs to be small because if it was heavy it could not run very fast. It has one of the slimmest, lightest builds of all the big cats.

... You were correct to say that the cheetah is a small cat. As part of the family Felidae, the cheetah is classified as a small cat. One reason for classifing cats as small, is the ability to purr, which they do. However they are not the largest small cat, the puma is. Cheetah range is size between 1.1-1.4 m and pumas measure 1.1-2 m.

The cheetah is NOT considered a "big cat" in the scientific world, there is only
FOUR big cats: Lion, Leopard, Tiger and SNOW Leopard. The cheetah isn't in this esteemed group due to the fact that it does not roar (the bone in the throat needed for this is missing in cheetahs). they, cheetahs, do grow to be quite big though and the snow leopard is if not the rarest captured/filmed animals, it's definitley the toughest cat to locate.
Yes a Cheetah is a big cat. The question is, is the cheetah a big cat, as in the BIG CAT group of felines? It is large in size, but not considered a "big cat" in the animal/zoo/conservation community.

∙ 7y agoThere is a difference of opinion by many scientists. However, most consider only those cats that can roar as the true big cats - lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars and snow leopards. Cheetahs and cougars are both large but cannot roar.
