No. Chickens won't hunt, sit, roll over, or beg - BUT They are catching on fast as both an urban and suburban pet. Called the pet that "gives back", chickens lavish affection on you like a dog might, but, unlike most pets, chickens give you eggs! There are sites dedicated to chickens as pets (although it is not a recognized catagory on Wiki yet) - I like the link in the related links, which not only states "Chickens ARE the new Dog"! But sells a wide range of chicken-related items for the birds and pet lovers alike. Do you know they actually sell diapers for chicken owners in apartments?
You can feed chickens dog food; chickens are omnivorous and eat almost anything. The only drawback to feeding dog food to chickens is that it is more expensive than feeding them grain and other purely vegetarian type food.
You trap them by using a dog
Put the dog on a lead whilst passing chickens and every time your dog tries to go them pull back on the lead and use a Stern "NO"
I first came across this concept from a guy in Connecticut who has since put togather a website dedicated to chickens as pets. It is called The New Dog (thenewdog.com). He has everything from chicken feeders and chicken houses to chicken diapers(!) and a slew of items for chicken enthusiasts from books to DVDs, clothes, jewelry and original art (paintings of chickens)! So, I believe this guy Steve at TheNewDog.com said it first!
There are some things you can do to discourage them from killing the chickens but it will never be safe for them to be with chickens without supervision. If you teach the dog a good recall then you will be able to call the dog away anytime it attempts to chase and kill a chicken and you could reward calm behavior (such as lying down and ignoring the chickens). But depending on the dog's prey dive they may never be able to be around chickens safely so use your judgement and keep the chickens safety in mind when trying to train him to be around them.
It depends on what type of dog it is and it depends on how aggressive or not the dog is. Mostly though most dogs will not eat a chicken, they will just be curious. I suggest you hold on to your dog by the collar or leash and just let them watch the chickens for a while. If you feel that maybe your dog won't attack the chickens, try and bring the dog a little closer. If dog tries to attack and eat the chickens, tell the dog NO! or whatever else you do to make the Dog learn.
yes
A small one.
Dog food, chickens and treats
to get to the other side
Some people keep chickens for food but chickens can be kept as pets. My family have four chickens. They aren't mean and are kind of like a dog. They follow us around and can be held. Basically the answer is yes.
Probably because you did not socialize the dog the the chickens when the dog was a pup so it would accept them as one of it's family / flock. You cannot take an older dog and put it with animals and expect it to just automatically protect them. The dog should be socialized to the animals when a pup, an older dog probably could be trained and monitored until it accepted the chickens as something it should protect, but easier to start with a pup.
