The answer is both yes and no. Jesus predicted correctly that His teachings would be divisive among men and even among believers. At the same time unity is something which Jesus taught and so it can be said that Jesus wants Christians to live in unity but He acknowledged that in this life we being sinners wouldn't. However, true Christian unity is certainly achievable where all are in submission to God and don't seek their own human way to unity which is often to ignore what God says and believe anything and everything.

New Testament perspective:The answer is an unqualified yes. True, Jesus indicated that His teachings would be divisive, but the division He spoke of was between believers and non-believers, not "amongst believers." Division amongst believers is absolutely contrary to Jesus' teachings.

John 17:20, 21 - "I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me." [NKJV]

These words point out the tragedy of divisions amongst "Christians"...they cause "the world" NOT to believe that the Father sent Him.

There is probably no 'general' answer to the question. Divisions based on customs language and religion?

Divisions based on customs, language, and religion can contribute to social fragmentation and conflict within a society as people may identify more strongly with their own group and may be less accepting of others. However, these divisions can also be a source of cultural richness and diversity, leading to a more vibrant and dynamic society that celebrates different traditions and beliefs. Finding ways to promote mutual understanding and respect among different groups can help bridge these divisions and foster social cohesion.
