They are becoming extinct because of lack of food, habitat and hunters.
While cougars have been driven out of some of their traditional habitat areas, or had their populations significantly reduced; particularly in the Continental United States the species is still quite abundant in Canada, Alaska and Latin America and is not in any danger of extinction.
The subspecies called Florida panther is, but as a species, the mountain lion is not endangered.
I'm 99% sure that it's a no. I haven't heard of that lately, and I'm a big fan of cougars, as you can probably tell by my username. I study them a lot. If I hear of anything, I'll change the answer.
