Dalmatians are loyal and faithful animals, and very good with children. However, they are highly energetic and boisterous, so firm but gentle training is necessary to teach them appropriate behaviour around children (and appropriate behaviour from children around a dog).

They are full of energy and have to have human companionship or they may get very depressed. If this happens then they will get mean. They are very protective over young people.

It all depends on how you train the dog. Though they were bred to run with horses so they have extreme energy and most people buy them for there children. Naturally the dog is easy to be with and likes people. They are normally a very good dog and very protective of usually a single person theve attached to. If you train them to be mean, they'll be mean, if you train them to be loving, then they will be loving. Dalmatians are not a breed to be trained to be mean, they are to easy going for that so people tend to not train them to be mean.

Yes it's one of the better guard dogs out of the breeds you wouldn't normally think of as a guard dog. It doesn't have the visual deterrent factor that you get with a breed normally associated with guarding though.

They are intelligent, but can be hyper, A poorly bred and trained Dalmatian can have behavior problems, including getting along with people, biting. They need a lot of exercise, and would not be a good indoor pet.
