In today's world, both parties are leaning left of center in many areas, such as spending and abridging Americans freedoms.
The strict sense of the word Liberal is a person that wants a strong central Federal Government. This would include many laws and regulations coming from the Federal Senate and House. Pot would be controlled, as they are currently attempting to control sugar. A true Liberal wants a string and fairly large Federal Government.
A strict Conservative would want a small and weaker Federal Government that allows each state to determine their laws. This would mean, for example, each state could determine whether pot is OK for their citizens.
Today Religion has been moved up in much of politics. While not particularly a bad issue, it has muddied waters. Many Republicans consider themselves strict Conservatives yet want more regulation and have been pro big Government spending.
Many Democrats consider themselves Liberals and desire no controls on items like pot. Some believe we are spending too much of our money on the Government. The idea that all Democrats are Liberal or Republicans are Conservative is obsolete and really no longer valid. Most of either party are left of center and very similar on almost all items. This is the basis of the Tea Party movement which is attempting to bring the Government back closer to center.
