Dirtbikes are not inherently dangerous. They are no more hazardous than any other bike. The danger is caused by the activities that are undertaken with the bikes. In many cases, the danger is a result of poor training or poor preparation. Even with the proper planning and protection, there can be hazards. The story below is an example of the possible dangers of the activities performed on a dirt bike even with protective equipment.
A contributor's story
I have a 9 year old son who was practicing for a MX race and he had on all the necessary protection such as neck brace, Helmet, Chest protector, and Boots!
He was airlifted to the Hospital UNCONSCIOUS after casing a jump and landing on his head! He had a Traumatic Brain injury (Bleeding in two places on the brain with swelling) and had a contusion on his lungs, and his liver was enflamed!!!!
As a mother, I sat there wondering if he would EVER wake up or if I would have to say Goodbye to my VERY young son who had not experienced LIFE!
He finally woke up after about 8 days and was transported to another hospital for Extreme In-Patient therapy to try to get him to start talking, walking, and just functioning day to day!!!
With A WHOLE LOT of PRAYER and THERAPY..... HE is now walking, talking and functioning after about 2 months!!! He is still in therapy now and still has some memory issues but he IS gonna be okay!!! Doctors ALL say that 1 more blow to the head could deem FATAL to him so ANY contact sports such as Football, MX racing, etc... he can no longer participate in....
