Most of life's history was spent evolving in the ocean so i would tend to lean towards water, but at the same time it is estimated that only 1 out of every 1000 species ever fossilize making it impossible to tell all of the species that have lived on the planet. Hence making it impossible to tell all of the species that went extinct.
Many of the animals began to die off and became extinct.
The Woolly mammoth is extinct (dead). When it was alive it was the biggest land animal but there were bigger animals in the sea.
