They are an older style of gasket. Mainly found in years below 2000. Its often the OEM replacement for 90's cars.
If you are able to, go with MLS gaskets. They are far stronger and will generally last longer. But you would probably be ok with graphite gaskets.
Never have seen a bad head gasket on a 3800 engine. The upper intake will leak coolant into the imtake ports and a greedy mechanic will tell you it's head gaskets. You may need to replace your oil pan gasket with a felpro perma dry gasket, cost more but worth it.
It is a good idea, most the time you blow a head gasket the head will be warped.
Blown head gasket or cracked head or both are a good bet.
No, absolutely not.
The Intake gasket is leaking, NOT THE HEAD GASKET. Replace the intake gasket
I found this online: I discovered yesterday that this 3.8l has 2 different intake gasket thickness's 3 or 4mm. I found thru here that intake gasket failure was common on the 3.8l. They saided that they improved the gasket making it thicker. So I'm gonna go ahead with the 4mm. Let us know how it went for you.
You need to remove the head cylinder and replace the gasket. You will need at least to get a good manual if you want to do it on your own.
Not good. Head gasket or cracked head. Exaust is getting into the water jacket somewhere. blown head gasket, or cracked head.
Maybe, it depents on the brand of gasket you are using, Victor Reinz makes a 350 specific gasket, most others brands are actually the larger bore (about 4.20-4.30) 389-455 gaskets. Measure the cylinder opening on the gasket. The 389 has a 4.060 bore the 350 is only 3.88. Make sure the gasket opening is at least 4.060 so it does not hang into the bore of the 389. If it does it will fail VERY quickly. The easiest way is to just set the gasket on the 389 block and see if it is the same or slightly larger than the 389's bores. Otherwise the gaskets are the same. The Felpro 1016 is a very good gasket for Pontiac 389-455 up to about 12.5:1 compression. after that Cometics are a good idea.
You do not repair a head gasket you replace it with a new gasket which requires removing the head.
The head gasket seals between the head and block. The head gasket is inside the engine, up high.
White smoke coming from the exhaust is a sign of a bad head gasket. There are some products that you can try for a blown head gasket but they are only good for small leaks. You will probably have to remove the head and replace the head gasket.
