footnotes
A footnoteis a piece of text which, for some reason, cannot be accommodated within the main body of the document and which is therefore placed elsewhere. It is usual, and preferable, to place footnotes at the bottom of the page on which they are referred to, but this usually requires a great deal of fiddling about, unless you are lucky enough to have a word processor which arranges footnotes automatically. It is easier for the writer to put all the footnotes at the end of the document, but of course this makes life harder for the reader, who is obliged to do a lot of fumbling about in order to find the footnotes. Exception:If you are preparing a work for publication, then you must put all the footnotes on separate pages at the end of your document; such notes are called endnotes. But don't use endnotes in a document which will pass directly from your hands to the reader.
It sounds as if you are referring to what, traditionally, were called footnotes, even if they appeared at the end of the chapter or book. Nowadays they are often referred to as endnotes.
Footnote is printed at the end of the document and Footer is printed at the bottom of each page.
That is called a footnote. Footnotes provide additional information or citations for sources referenced in the main text. They usually appear at the bottom of the same page or at the end of the document.
Footnotes are not typically required in MLA format. Instead, MLA style uses in-text citations to acknowledge sources. However, if needed, footnotes can be used for supplementary information or to expand on a point that cannot be included in the main text.
Footnotes are typically used to provide additional information or clarification on a specific point within the text, appearing at the bottom of the page where the reference occurs. Endnotes, on the other hand, are placed at the end of the document and serve a similar purpose but without disrupting the flow of the main content. Both help readers access supplementary details without cluttering the main text.
With Footnotes was created in 1974.

A reference marker that a source might use is a superscript number placed at the end of a sentence or phrase within the content to indicate a citation. This number corresponds to a full citation located either at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or at the end of the document (endnotes).
