So long as the snake finds the habitat beneficial, the snake will live there. Garter snakes prefer wet woodland areas and they can usually be found underneath some sort of cover. If you have a pond, chances are you will always have garter snakes. if you eliminate places for them to hide around the yard it may help. Other than that, they mean no harm, so you may just have a new neighbor!
