Since ghosts are not real, they are neither. They exist only in the imaginations of the easily impressed.
Torches in the hands of the great spirits. These lights guide the spirits of the recently dead to the land of light and feasting. Only the spirits, the dead and the ever present raven may travel there. Traditional lore claims the Inuit may call the lights to converse with the dead who signal back in a whistling sound and can hear the whispers of the peoples of earth.
Halloween and Day of the Dead both have to do with the spirits of the dead, though Halloween has more to do with warding off evil spirits and Day of the Dead is focused more on welcoming the spirits of family ancestors back into the household, and respecting the dead.
Ancestor Worship
A dead person is one who's spirit has left its body, therefore a dead person without its spirit cannot walk around. It is impossible for them to do so. There are spirits that roam the earth (These spirits are not ghosts). Some are the spirits of Satan, while others are righteous spirits who have a special purpose for being here on earth.
