Goldfish are very delicate and often cannot survive in the wild, but they are not endangered. Since Goldfish do not appear in the wild naturally and are a result of selective breeding, there is currently a good supply of Goldfish. Goldfish breeding is an industry itself that regularly produces rare and expensive fish.
If Goldfish breeding were to stop, however, Goldfish would maybe become endangered. They would not die out completely but they would not be goldfish as we know them. After a few generations in the wild, goldfish revert back to their dark greenish brown scale color and begin to resemble the less delicate carp that are more fitted to survive. Some less durable types of goldfish would die out completely.
Rest assured, our favorite fish is nowhere near endangered. It simply needs constant care and attention to stay that way.
