Yes, they are. Unless they are dwarf chinese, robo, or gerbils, but gerbils aren't actually hamsters... If you want to put 2 males together, forget it. I did and one ripped 1 square inch of SKIN and fur off his butt. DONT PUT MALES TOGETHER, EVER! NO MATTER WHAT THE PERSON AT THE PET STORE SAYS!!!

As pets they are very sociable, as in they can be picked up and cuddled and played with- although keep an eye on them, they won't stay round for long! The syrian breed of hamster has to live on its own, if that's solitary, because when they are fully grown they will kill each other, but most other hamster breeds will live in pairs. Even with syrians you need to make sure that they have plenty of toys such as a ball or wheel to run around in, etc.
