The earth bulges at the equator. That means that if you consider altitude above the centre of the earth instead of above sea level, the highest mountain is Chimborazo, only one degree south of the equator in Ecuador.

The top is two kilometres further from the centre of the earth than Mount Everest. You can walk two kilometres in twentyfive minutes on the flat, but climbing it is a different matter.
