Stallions, like most every male animal, are often larger, which translates into longer strides, making a faster horse. Also, males of all species are more althetic than females. That's just how it is. So, the answer to your question is generally stallions. However, there are some fast mares, faster than some stallions, so don't underestimate the girls!

It all depends on the breed, build, and condition of the horses. A Percheron mare will be miles stronger than a Shetland stallion. A fit mare in good condition and good health will be stronger than a thin, unfit, sickly stallion. Stocky mares with plenty of muscle tone can be stronger than leaner and more delicate stallions. However, if both horses are of the same breed and in the same condition, the stallion will usually be stronger than the mare due to the high levels of testosterone in his body, causing him to have advanced muscle tone and a strong, masculine body type. It all depends on the fitness of the horses in question. A mare can certainly be as strong as a stallion, and do the work required of him, if she is well taken care of and in the right condition.
