In Halo: Combat Evolved, the hunters can prove to be actually pretty weak. One shot to the back with a pistol will kill him. In the other halos especially the third one, they are much more stonger.

∙ 12y agohunters are the strong'st heavy troopers the covanent have and you can only kill them by shooting or pumeling them in the back it might also work useing a rocket launcher or plasma grenade

In halo 2 the hunters, grunts, and elites are technically sided with the arbiter. The arbiter later sides with master chief and around that time the elites decide to not follow the other alien brethren so the hunters and grunts no longer side with you. In the end once all the prophets are dead, the elites return to their home-world so they may once again be a part of their brethren.
