Ok well this is quite simple actually:

Think of a hydrocarbon i.e CH3CH2CH3 (propane) which is found in liquid state.

And then think of water H20.

Water's structure allows it to form Hydrogen bonds between each water molecule whereas the hydrocarbon can't.
