The real value comes from the scientific value or the novelty of having a rock from outer space that survived the fiery entry through the atmosphere. Some sell for a few dollars, while others sell for thousands.
I believe the most value in meteorites is in the information about our universe that they contain. They could be from the asteroid belt, from destroyed planets, or even from distant solar systems or galaxies. There is no dollar value for that kind of information.
Then again, there is the principle of economics that anything is only worth what somebody will pay for it.
