I wouldn't recommend one for someone who's a beginner with reptiles. Many monitors grow fairly large (3-4 feet or more !) and some require specialised living conditions.
Additionally - some specimens can be VERY bad-tempered, and will attempt to bite anything (or anyone) who gets too close !
