I think some mules are intelligent. I've owned six and two of them were dumb asses. I couldn't get them to learn a thing. My friend and mule raiser told me that was a sign of intelligence- an animal who won't put up with a human. Hard to say.

I have seen mules pick up a bucket with their mouth and bring it to their owner for a bit of grain.

Of course none of them can write an essay or run a computer.

Are mules better than horses?

Answer 1. They are stronger, more stubborn, and clumsier than horses. if you want something for pack, mules would be better. If you want something to ride, horses are better. Answer 2. They are better than horses at all sports and for farm work. They train well (there are quite a few in the USA doing competitive dressage, for example), are about 50% stronger than horses and require about 40% less food. They are also highly intelligent, their IQs being in the same range as that of the most intelligent dogs.

Why did the ANZACs use donkeys instead of horses?

I wasn't aware that they did, although I know that they used mules. Both mules and donkeys are more intelligent and faithful than horses. They can also survive better in desert conditions as they barely sweat. US and British Army regulations state that 5 mules must be kept on the rations of 3 horses, showing that they are much cheaper to keep.
