Best Answer

Most collectors prefer to have the stamp in its original position, on envelope or document. This shows the usage of the stamp as it was intended and will have more value than the stamp by itself.

Not necessarily. Most postage stamps that have been used are worth only pennies.Unused stamps are still worth their face value. What is the value of 1942 ration stamps?

Although there are rare stamps, in general WWII food ration stamps in a book of stamps (with some missing) are worth $2 to $5. An absolutely new book of stamps (unsigned) might be worth $10 or more. A book of stamps signed by someone famous would, of course, be worth even more. Loose stamps (not in a book) are generally worthless - a few pennies, if that.

Is it better or worth more to collect stamps that have been cancelled or that have not been used?

In most cases, mint stamps, those that have not been used, are worth more. In a few cases, used stamps are more valuable. Modern used stamps are typically worth very little, but there are exceptions and the most valuable stamps in the world are used.

What makes stamp collections valuable?

The value of a stamp collection will depend heavily on which stamps are included, some being far more collectible and desired than others. Value is also determined by the condition of the stamps. An unopened kit collection is not always worth more than a randomly collected and handled collection. While the kit stamps will often be in pristine condition, they still must be specifically sought after in order to be worth money to a collector.

If a stamp has been postmarked is it still a collector item?

Possibly--some used stamps are very rare and very valuable. Some collectors prefer used stamps, especially ones that are still on their envelopes with all the postal markings. Most stamps are worth more unused, but there are a lots of exceptions-- in some cases governments sold unused stamps to collectors in large quantities, but very few were actually used , or even available for postage.

What is the value of a 1974 U.S postal service mint set of commemorative stamps?

These stamps are still good for postage. They are still worth face value to anyone who needs stamps for postage. A dealer might charge twice face for them, so if you could find a collector who was thinking about buying them from a dealer, you could make a deal. A dealer will not likely pay more than face for them.

What are canceled stamps and are they worth anything?

Cancellation refers to the postal markings printed on stamps after they are mailed. Stamps with these marks on them are known as "cancelled" or "used" stamps. Yes, they are worth something to collectors, but their value varies widely, from almost nothing ( say 5 cents per hundred) to thousands of dollars. That depends a great deal on the stamp. In general, stamps on cover are worth more than those off of the cover. To determine value, you would have to consult a catalog or dealer.

Are first day cover stamps worth the same as ordinary stamps?

First Day Covers are worth more than ordinary covers. Stamps bought on the first day themselves, without cancellations, cannot be identified as being issued on the first day. Leave them on the cover if you have them!

Are long stamps rare?

Stamp with picture of buffalo worth?

There are many stamps with buffaloes on them. Need to get more information to identify them. Most used US postage stamps are worth 15 or 20 cents, the minimum amount required to catalog and stock the stamps. Unused will always be worth at least their face value. Special cancellations and different values are likely to be worth more. Consult a postage stamp catalog, usually available at your local library for exact identification and catalog values.

I have the whole collection of 22 cent stamps that came out. What is their value?

For the most part they are going to be worth 22 cents. They can still be used for postage. There might be a couple of stamps that could be sold for a bit more than face value, but they aren't going to get you much more than that. You can consult a catalog or check out the prices on eBay for additional estimations.
