Generally yes, unless you get hung up in the stirrup. A lace-up or zip up boot will not slide off your foot and you may be dragged. A pull-on boot should slip off of your foot.

If you are wearing lace up boots, tying them up very loosely so they can slip off would be safer.

Yes and no, paddock or jodphur boots can be ridden in. But this may cause rubbing or a painful part on your leg from the stirrup strap. (This only goes for English Riders, I am interested to see what type of boots you can wear riding western. You can still ride in the bots but you have a chance of getting a leather burn on your leg. Please tell me your thought on this subject, from either people that have a different opinion as me. Also people who ride a different style of riding, maybe, western, dressage or something different.

What are paddock boots?

This is the most popular style of riding boot and can range greatly in price. Paddock boots are short boots which come up over the ankle. They can come as lace up, zip up or pull on. You can get these boots in vinyl or leather. With paddock boots you would usually wear a jodhpur riding pant (jods - elastic goes over the boot). Most people choose to wear a ½ chap with a paddock boot - which mimics a tall riding boot. Blundstones are considered paddock boots.

Does it matter if you wear tall boots or paddack boots when horse back riding?

Unless you're riding for show, or in full dress, it doesn't matter as much what kind of boots you wear. As long as the boots have a good heel on them so that your foot doesn't slip through, either paddock boots or tall boots can be worn. (Or any other pair of boots.)

When you are riding the best footwear you can wear is?

Riding boots! These are specifically designed for riding horses and are safe, as they have a heel which prevents your foot becoming stuck in the stirrup. However, paddock boots can also be worn, as well as wellington boots if you cannot find riding boots or are trying riding for the first time. NEVER wear trainers or flat soled shoes as these have no heels and your foot could slip through the stirrups and your foot could become stuck which is very dangerous.

What shoes are appropiate for horse riding?

The best kind of shoe to wear while riding is a boot with a small heel - about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. If you are riding bareback, or on a saddle without stirrups, You can wear tennis shoes, but the heels on riding boots help prevent your foot getting stuck in the stirrup, in the case of an accident. If you are a serious horseman/horsewoman, you should purchase some paddock boots, or perhaps field boots. For those who compete, the best options are dress boots, field boots, or paddock boots WITH chaps. However, there may be certain rules as to what you can wear.

What do you wear when you ride?

Depending on what type of riding you plan on doing, especially if you're riding someone else's horses on someone else's property, you would be expected to wear an ASTM & SEI certified riding helmet, paddock boots or tall riding boots (or at least comfortable close-toed shoes that you don't mind getting dirty), and protective long pants. Those who make riding a regular part of their life often have either full chaps or half chaps that they'll wear with paddock boots (when not wearing tall boots), and breeches or tights that are made particularly for horseback riding. Gloves are also often useful even in the summer because they can help a rider keep their grip on the reins.
