Paladins are stronger players once you hit level 75 onwards - from this point DKs stop being overpowered, and paladins take charge. I mean, paladins wear plate (the toughest armor), can do very, very high DPS, can tank, and also heal (others and themselves). Note: I myself don't play as a paladin as they're so common I find them dull. (Yes, I know there are good paladins and bad paladins, but even a bad paladin can bubble and hearth when they're in trouble. 1-2-3 easy.)
Paladins have been nerfed in the last few patches, but they still outrank DKs, which I believe could do with less nerfing, more pew-pew... overall paladins are stronger than almost any other class, in terms of the spells and abilities you have to work with.
(PS if - a very small chance, I know - you meant are they supposed to be "good" as opposed to "evil", they're playable by both factions and don't really have a good/evil aspect. If you mean will they appear as good or evil in the upcoming WoW film, who knows. But I believe a human warrior will play the lead "goodie". )
In World of Warcraft, Paladins are holy warriors in service to the Light. They are bastions of the pure standing against the unholy, the undead and the wicked.
Originally, Priests were the only ones to call on the Light to heal their allies and smite their foes. However, many died because they had only a limited ability to defend themselves when alone on the battlefield. Some began to learn how to wield swords and shields, and wear heavy plate armor. This allowed them to survive the dangers of war while still being able to be of service to the Light.
Paladins can be solitary, on a personal calling of the Light and wandering the world punishing evil and protecting the weak. Others belong to one of the known Paladin orders, including the Silver Hand (now defunct), the Scarlet Crusade (now gone mad and abandoning the Alliance while still somehow gaining the power of the Light), the Argent Dawn (reformed from the Silver Hand), and the Argent Crusade (the Argent Dawn as it moved into Northrend).
Blood Elf Paladins are a special case, once having drained the power of a Paladin from a captive Naaru, the events of the Burning Crusade led to them being redeemed and fully able to call on the Light on their own. Their order is called the Blood Knights.
Paladins can use 1 and 2 handed Axes, 1 and 2 handed maces, 1 and 2 handed swords, and polearms. No ranged weapons, daggers, staves, or fist weapons. Also, they cannot dual wield.
/cast divine shield /cast hearthstone It's called Bubble Hearthing.
Warriors, mages, death knights, paladins, rogues, and hunters can use one handed swords.
Dwarves can be warriors, paladins, priests, death knights, and rogues. In Cataclysm (due out soon) there is talk of them being able to be mage, shaman and even warlocks.
Frostfourne is unable to get, instead they made Shadowmourn which is available to paladins, DK's and warriors, you can obtain it by completing a very long and hard quest line in ICC
Paladins, Priests, Druids and Shamans can resurrect people outside of combat. In addition, Druids are able to bring people back from the dead while you are in combat.
World of Warcraft lore can be found at the official World of Warcraft website, along with other sites, but it is a good place to start. On the official site they have the history and lore of the Warcraft Universe.
