There is no reason in principle why an authentic scientist could not do research in the field of paranormal phenomena, but there is a very corrupting influence at work in that field. People will pay much more to be fooled by fake psychics than they will pay to find out that psychics are fake. People LIKE paranormal phenomena. They want to believe in them. This tends to skew the research. So I would approach anyone claiming to do research in this field with great caution. If you would like to better understand what is going on, I recommend a book by the late Carl Sagan called "The Demon Haunted World".
