Being 'free' today vs being 'free' during the 18th century are two very different things. I don't know if you can really say that people during one time frame were 'more' free than the others.

During both periods, you could always walk away from everything and try to set up a home, farm or living area by yourself. Perhaps this is what is really meant by 'being free'.
